Chapter Seven
I woke with a start, sensing something off I strained my senses. A glance out the window and at the night sky told me it was still early in the night, nowhere near midnight, so Iâd only slept a few hours. I didnât sense any threats, no one with enhanced Ki save the four of us, but something had woken me up out of my sleep and I searched for whatever it was.
A moment later I heard Taliaâs whimper and the wild rustling of sheets with my enhanced hearing technique. Thatâs what had woken me, Talia was having a nightmare, and a doozy of one. I considered it for a brief moment, if sheâd thank me for getting involved, but the next whimper of despair decided me.
I got up and moved out of the bedroom, and into hers. She was tossing and turning, her muscles tight and strained as she wrestled with the sheets, and her face was twisted in a rictus of emotional distress and pain. I was quite sure this wasnât common, as Iâd slept in the same room or under the same stars with her and the others up until that night.
So perhaps it was the private room, and her not sensing companions nearby, that triggered the nightmare, or at least it was likely a part of why she was having one that night. Wary of being hit, I approached the bed cautiously and then gently leaned in and shook her shoulder.
âTalia, youâre having a nightmare. Wake up.â
It took two more shakes, and she woke with wild gasp, a lunge, and the wild swing Iâd been anticipating. I leaned down further to dodge the palm strike and gripped her arms just below the elbows, as she twisted in a panic.
âItâs me. You were having a nightmare.â
She froze as reality finally impinged on her nightmare and fear. Disturbingly, she looked rather alluring sheened in sweat and in her night gown, which left a whole lot more to the imagination than her armor, but it was rather more intimate and clung in a few places tempting the eyes. The sheet had been tossed when sheâd lunged up, and I took a step back as I released her arms. It was more than just the dress, it was her vulnerability in the moment and the way her deep wild breaths had her chest heaving.
It was also all beside the point, save I couldnât deny the effect she had on me. Sheâd always been attractive, and on top of the mentioned shallow points was the fact I admired her now and we were growing closer, if in fits and starts, which enhanced her desirability by leaps and bounds. Even her temper and tempestuous nature had started to draw me in, her impulsiveness becoming downright charming to me.
She blinked, and her wild breathing slowed, âI woke you up? Sorry. I⦠need air, it feels too hot and stuffy in here.â
She slipped out of the bed and headed outside, rounded the small house, and then moved into the garden.
